March is Literacy Month

Rotary considers literacy to be so important that it is one of the six areas of focus for The Rotary Foundations Future Vision - basic education and literacy. UNESCO estimates there are 862 million illiterate adults in the world and about two-thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills necessary for every day life.

This month would be a great time to think of the how we could be more involved in helping those individuals attain the skills to become literate. Rotary works together with the International Reading Association, combining their resources and skills to advocate literacy in communities worldwide:

  • Providing books and educational materials
  • Building and supporting schools
  • Mentoring students
  • Training teachers
  • Establishing literacy programs for children and adults.
